SWINGING ROCKWELLS

The Swinging Rockwells is a band that came about as a result of my 40+ years musical relationship with master pianist Jay Cooley.
We played in top 40 rock bands when we were in high school. Moved on to form talent agency bands playing weddings and cocktail parties for years in the Washington-Maryland-Virginia area. But for all the commercial music we had to play to pay the rent, we never lost sight of the challenging music we loved to listen to and aspired to play.
The Swinging Rockwells plays jazz. The music is steeped in the be-bop era, but lends itself to the modern musing of the post bop and fusion period. Of course our love of the old standards of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s is hard to miss. Nobody plays a ballad like Jay Cooley.

Besides Jay Cooley’s incredible touch and time, the band is filled out by the fantastic saxophone work of Bruce Swaim. Bruce’s great taste and dazzling technique proves he is every bit as good as any sax player around. Listen to Chick Corea’s Tones For Joans Bones and you will hear what I am saying.

The drum chair is held by the ever swinging Scott Taylor, another veteran of the DC music scene. It is Scott’s versatile command of comtemporary rhythm that gives The Swinging Rockwells the sound of jazz now.

Of course I, Scott Giambusso, am the band bass holder and get to sit in the middle of all of this glorious music and always ready to add my two cents to the music.
The Swinging Rockwells repertoire is huge. We go through phases of studying and playing different composers. In the last year we were featured artists for the Montgomery College Music department performing the Music of Thelonius Monk and Chick Corea. Listen to these sound clips from the show
